Tumbling compost bin questions

How often should I turn a tumbling compost bin?

Turning every few days keeps the pile aerated and speeds decomposition.

What is the advantage of a dual chamber tumbler?

You can add fresh scraps to one side while the other side cures.

Do tumbling bins need to be in the sun?

Most plastic drums are UV resistant, so direct sun is fine.

Can I put meat or dairy in a tumbling bin?

That depends on your local rules and whether the bin is sealed.

Rotating drums for outdoor batches

Tumbling compost bins are rotating drums mounted on a frame. You load scraps and yard waste into the drum, then spin it to turn and aerate the pile. The spinning replaces manual forking.

Dual chamber versus single drum

Many tumblers in this group have two chambers. You fill one side while the other side finishes curing. That lets you keep adding fresh material without disturbing the batch that is almost done. Single drum models are simpler but you have to stop adding to let the whole load finish.

Sizes and materials

Capacities in this group run from 43 gallons to 53 gallons. The drums are plastic, often described as UV resistant and BPA-free. Colors include green, black, gray, blue, brown, orange, and yellow.

Some models include a stainless steel center tube that runs through the drum to add air. Frames are metal and the drums sit on a pivot so they spin 360 degrees. Assembly is usually required and is described as easy on most models.

Where tumblers fit

Tumblers suit yards with space for a freestanding bin and a supply of kitchen scraps plus yard waste. They are not for indoor use. If you only need to collect scraps in the kitchen before carrying them out, a countertop pail is the smaller, simpler option.
