What an underground compost bin is

Most units are cylindrical or slightly tapered tubes. The lid sits flush or just above the soil line, and the body has holes on the sides and sometimes the bottom. Because the bin stays in place, you never lift or rotate it. Harvesting means digging out finished castings or simply moving the bin to a new spot and letting the old hole enrich the soil.

How it differs from a tumbling or tray bin

A tumbling bin is a drum on a stand that you spin to aerate a batch above ground. A tray worm bin stacks separate levels and you harvest the bottom tray. An underground bin has no moving parts and no trays. It works in place, in the soil, and relies on ground worms rather than a managed colony. That makes it simpler to run but slower to produce finished compost you can carry elsewhere.

Capacities run small, from 3 liters up to 8 liters per unit. Dimensions cluster around 10 to 12 inches tall and 4 to 6 inches across, with some tubes listed at 11.2 inches.
