How many trays do I need to start?

Three trays is enough to begin; you add more as the worm population grows.

Can I use a multi-tray bin indoors?

What happens if I overload the top tray?

Excess food sits and may rot or attract pests before the worms can process it.

Do I need to rotate the trays?

No, you harvest the bottom tray and move it to the top when it is full of castings.

How stacked trays work

Worms start in the lowest tray and move upward as they finish the food in each layer. You add fresh scraps to the top tray, and the worms migrate through the bedding to reach it. The bottom tray collects liquid that drains through the stack, which you empty through a spigot or spout.

Tray count and capacity

Tray count ranges from three to five, and total capacity runs from 32QT to 53QT. A three-tray bin holds less finished castings at one time but takes up less vertical space. Five-tray systems let you harvest from the bottom while the top trays are still processing.

What to check before buying

Tray fit matters because gaps let worms escape or let trays wobble when stacked. Look for a secure lid that keeps pests out and retains moisture. If you plan to keep the bin indoors, check that the footprint fits your space and that the drain spout is reachable without moving the whole stack.
