Small bins for daily kitchen scraps

Countertop compost bins are small containers meant to sit on a kitchen counter and hold food scraps for a few days. They are not the place where composting happens. They are a holding pail you empty into a larger outdoor bin or a municipal collection.

The sizes in this group run from about 1 liter up to 7 liters, with a few larger 15 to 20 liter options. A 1 gallon pail is common. That is roughly 4 liters. Most people find a 1 to 2 gallon bin holds two to four days of scraps for a small household.

They come in stainless steel, often 304 grade, and in plastic. Colors include black, gray, green, blue, red, and mint green. Matte finishes show fewer fingerprints than polished ones.

Lids, filters, and inner buckets

Most countertop bins have a lid. Some lids seal with a gasket. Others have a charcoal filter in the lid to cut odor. A few models include a deodorizer compartment built into the lid.

Some bins use a removable inner bucket. You lift the bucket out, carry it to the outdoor pile, and dump it. That keeps the outer shell clean. Bins without an inner bucket are usually one piece and get rinsed whole.
