Bokashi bin questions
Can a bokashi bin take meat and dairy?
Yes, the fermentation process handles meat, dairy, and small bones that outdoor bins cannot.
Does a bokashi bin need a drain spout?
Yes, liquid collects during fermentation and must be drained every few days.
What sizes do bokashi bins come in?
Common capacities include 18.8l, 20l, and 21l.
Is the bran included with the bin?
Some kits include a 2 lb bran bag, others sell the bucket alone.
What a bokashi kit is
A bokashi kit is a sealed bucket with a lid and a drain spout, sold with a bag of inoculated bran. The bran carries microbes that ferment food scraps instead of rotting them. You pack scraps in, sprinkle bran between layers, and keep the lid closed. Liquid drains from the spout every few days.
How it differs from other bins
Tumbling bins and static bins break down yard waste with air and time. A bokashi bin works indoors on kitchen scraps, including meat, dairy, and small bones, which those outdoor bins should not take. Worm bins process food too, but worms need a bedding tray system and cannot handle the same range of scraps.
Bokashi does not finish compost. The fermented output is a pre-compost that still needs a second stage in soil or a traditional pile. That two-step process is the main trade-off against a worm bin or a tumbler.
