Wire mesh bin questions
Do wire mesh bins need a lid?
Most samples have no lid, so rain and air reach the pile directly.
Can I turn a pile in a wire mesh bin?
Yes, but you turn it with a fork rather than a crank.
What keeps the metal from rusting?
Samples list a rust-proof coating on the wire.
Do any wire mesh bins have a door?
One sample includes a front access door for removing compost.
Open-air cages for yard waste
A wire mesh compost bin is a metal cage that holds yard waste in a pile while air moves through all sides. There is no drum, no crank, and no lid on most models. You fill it, turn the pile with a fork, and let it sit.
How it differs from a tumbler
A tumbler encloses waste in a drum you rotate by hand, which speeds turning and keeps material contained. A wire mesh bin leaves the pile open, so you turn it manually and rain reaches it. The trade-off is ventilation: mesh gives more airflow, tumblers give more control.
Sizes, metal, and coatings
Capacities in this form run from small square cages up to extra large models. Sizes include: 160 gallon, 170 gallon, 172 gallon, 285 gallon, 30 x 30 x 24 inches, 30 x 30 x 30 inches, 37 x 37 x 30 inches. Most are steel wire with a rust-proof coating; one sample is described as garden bed fencing. Colors are black and green, and some models include a front access door for pulling finished compost from the bottom.
